What should I replace amalgams with?
Metal-free dentistry is a distinct reality. Many dentists will argue that it is difficult to achieve or elitist, but this is certainly not true. When you have your mercury amalgams, metal crowns and old fillings replaced you need to ask for metal-free compounds.
Note that most composites (white fillings) also contain metals, such as aluminum, which used to harden the plastics, but you are unlikely to be informed of this. Ensure that all foreign material that is placed in you mouth is metal-free and ask your dentist to supply you with product information, called the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), to make informed decisions about your dental treatment.
Simply replacing your amalgam fillings with any white composite material is not safe enough. You need to use bio-compatible composites. The only way to ensure you obtain bio-compatible products is to obtain a bio-compatibility test, but this does not exclude you becoming sensitive to it in the future. None-the-less it includes comprehensive results of bonding agents, crown materials and every other dental product your dentist is likely to use.
The Clifford Consulting and Research Lab or Scientific Health Solutions (as now recommended by Dr Hal Huggins), conduct bio-compatibility testing, but if you can’t afford these tests (the Clifford test recently priced at $245 without shipping costs, which requires a blood sample to get there within 3 – 6 days), then choose a material of known high bio-compatibility rating.
Currently we believe the most bio-compatible materials to be:
- South Africa list of safe dental supplies.
- Composite fillings: Diamond Lite or TPH. Dr Clark has recommended TPH and Z250 (but we are not comfortable with Z250).
- Crowns/inlays/onlays: Diamond Crown or SR-Adoro.
- Partial and full dentures: Flexite or Valplast
- Bonding agents: Quiz your dentist on the bio-compatibility of the bonding agents. Diamond Bond is an option.
If you are unsure what to use, then at this stage ask your dentist to use Diamond Products from DRM Labs (Tel: 203-488-5555 and email: [email protected]).
In South Africa contact this distributor when ordering. Contact your dentist and request this material. It seemingly requires more care to use and time constraints come into play making the dentist not want to use it, or blame the material when problems arise.
Here is some info on Diamond products from DRM Research.
“Biocompatibility of the entire range -DiamondCrown, DiamondLite, DiamondBond and DiamondLink has been tested according to ADA/ANSI recommendations for biological evaluation of dental materials
(ref: Document # 41). All Diamond products scored an excellent zero rating and were found to be non reactive and non cytotoxic.
This is contrast to many commercially available dental materials.
The scale used by ADA/ANSI in biological testing is 0 to 5:
where 5 is toxic
less than 2 is considered acceptable
ZERO shows no sign of cytotoxicity or reactivity and is rated excellent.
CONCLUSION: DiamondCrown, DiamondLite, DiamondBond and DiamondLink do not contain any cytotoxic-metallic ion constituents, any evaporable methacrylic acid constituents or any chemistry that yields mucous membrane irritation, fibroblasts changes, epithelial changes, microabcess formation, lysis or haemolytic behaviour. This is in contrast to many other commonly used dental restoratives.”

These composites are available and you must clearly ask for them should you decide to use them. Much of this opinion is based on that of certain “Biologic Dentists” including Dr Morales and those that have worked with Dr Hulda Clark.
Use your own judgment in making these choices and don’t merely rely on the dentist who will most likely tell you that any white composite material he uses is safe and metal-free.
If you wish to see other options, that we have accumulated through discussions on the Dental-Chelation Yahoo group, then go to the drop down menu towards the top of this page:
Move your mouse to Dental , then >>>> Materials (Crowns fillings etc) >>> and several options will appear, including the MSDS’s for some. Please let us know of any interesting information you might find by joining the Dental-Chelation Yahoo group.
Insist that your dentist follows all of the Precautions for safe mercury amalgam removal. If he/she refuses consider seeking treatment elsewhere and do not proceed until you have found someone willing to follow the protocol strictly.
Chelation:
Safe chelation protocols must be followed after to carry the mercury about of your body, as it has no way of getting out on its own. Many people only received the benefits of amalgam removal when they chelate, even years later!
Only consider Andy Cutler’s oral chelation protocol which is the safest and most effective way to chelate.
Do not consider other forms of chelation as they are likely to hurt you.
